Russets with Mandalay, cinnamon and silver ancestry

The russet colour pattern arose in a line of traditional UK-style pedigree Burmese. To find out how it interacted with colours and patterns not traditionally found in Burmese, I mated russet Burmese cats with some of my New Zealand Mandalays. Mandalays are a breed very similar to the UK Asian Shorthair, although without chinchilla Persian ancestry. I have produced russet Mandalays on self black, chocolate and cinnamon backgrounds, and on black, cinnamon and black silver tabbies. There is very little difference in appearance between genetically self and tabby russets. The reddish overlay colour has a rich tan tone in cats without the Burmese colour restriction gene, noticeably different from sex-linked red. The single silver russet bred so far ended up almost white.

Studs

Ch Wiskersondarox Harry Whodeni
I got Harry from Yvette after Russell spent a short time with her helping her get established as a new breeder. Harry was from her first litter, from Russell and a lilac caramel silver Burmese mother. I had lost my silver line when Twilight died too young without leaving progeny with me, so was very happy to have the opportunity to get Harry. He has a really delightful temperament. Harry is a very handsome chocolate silver ticked tabby Burmese, carrying dilute, russet, and non-agouti, and possibly masking caramel. He's a big boy! I'm looking forward to seeing kittens from him in future.

Ch Rafoej Justice
Justice is a handsome seal russet Burmese, carrying cinnamon and dilute. His parents were Russell and Summer. He is a continuation of my line of cinnamon carriers mated back to traditional Burmese every generation, so his non-Burmese ancestry proportion is now tiny (1/128 Abbysinian and 1/2048 domestic shorthair), and he's a very nice russet Burmese as well. He's gathering points towards his Grand Champion title. Like his father, he's been slower to develope the reddish overlay colour than many russets, and still looks quite brown overall.

Ch Rafoej Nairobi
Nairobi is a son of Caramela and Happy, a very handsome chocolate, homozygous ticked tabby Mandalay, tested as carrying cinnamon, dilute, Burmese restriction, and classic tabby pattern. Unfortunately, he didn't inherit the russet gene, but he will still be a very useful breeding cat.

Champion Rafoej Total Eclipse
Eclipse is a very beautiful ebony son of Lucy and Shadow. He has a lovely nature. It's great to be back in black; it's many generations since I've had an ebony to show. I'm looking forward to showing him and seeing kittens from him. He's tested as carrying chocolate (not cinnamon or russet unfortunately, but we can't have everything), dilute and Burmese restriction, and masking heterozygous ticked tabby and carrying classic pattern.

Queens

Ch Rafoej Congruence
Connie is a very nice-looking and nice-natured seal/brown Burmese, from a completely traditionally-bred Burmese mother (Missie) and a Mandalay father (Shadow). She has done very well on the show bench and is half-way to her Grand Champion title. She will be used for Mandalay, not traditional Burmese breeding.
Picture
Rafoej Essence
Essence is a very pretty lilac caramel ticked tabby (heterozygous) daughter of Kismet and Shadow. She carries russet.
Picture
Rafoej Granache
Granache is a daughter of Caramela and Swirl. She is a chocolate heterozygous ticked tabby Burmese, carrying non-agouti, dilute and russet; she could also mask caramel. Granache is a sweetie; she has a lovely coat, and a very nice head.
Picture
Rafoej Lucy
Lucy is a chocolate Burmese from Regret and Happy (both Mandalays). She is sleek and elegant with stunning deep gold eye colour, and an affectionate, outgoing temperament. She carries cinnamon and classic pattern, and masks a heterozygous ticked tabby pattern. She is the mother of the lovely Eclipse.
Picture
Rafoej Perchance
Perchance is a very pretty seal ticked (homozygous, with wide-banding) tabby Burmese, from Shadow and Regret. She carries non-agouti, russet, chocolate and dilute. The plan is to mate her to Nairobi in due course.
Picture
Rafoej Ratchet
Ratchet is an ebony kitten from an accidental mating that happened when Glitter manage to open the bathroom window and get outside. She had a black and white brother, so that's the likely colour of her unknown domestic short-hair father as well. She is reasonably Burmese in type, very glossy black, and has been DNA tested as carrying russet, chocolate and dilute. I have permission to pursue a new Mandalay programme with her - we'll see how it goes.
